The Wonderful Invention of Air Conditioning!

Air conditioning is such an integral part of life today that it is hard to imagine that mankind did without it for literally thousands of years. The fact is that air conditioning is a relatively modern invention that is hardly over a hundred years old. What is more, it took several decades for this marvelous invention to become a ubiquitous part of most homes.

The History of Air Conditioning

Willis Carrier, a young engineer in New York, was the inventor of the first air conditioning unit. However, his device was not intended to provide a pleasant temperature to home and business owners but rather to reduce humidity in the printing plant where he was employed. Even so, he worked hard to perfect his new invention and in 1922, he designed the centrifugal chiller to reduce his AC unit’s size. In 1925, one of Mr. Carrier’s first AC unit was installed in Rivoli Theater in Times Square.

From the 1930s onward, a growing number of businesses saw the value of having indoor air conditioning for the hot summer months. Stores, rail cars and offices alike begin ordering air conditioning units from Carrier’s new company, the Carrier Corporation. Even tightwad business owners with companies that did not provide services directly to the public began ordering HVAC units once it became apparent that creating a cool, pleasant environment for office workers dramatically boosted their productivity.

Residential HVAC Unit Usage

At the same time, homeowners were slow to embrace the new device. In fact, stats from 1965 show that only about 10% of all U.S. homes had an air conditioning unit. However, the number grew steadily from there and by 2007 more than 85% of U.S. homes had indoor air conditioning. In fact, the invention of residential HVAC units has been credited with a long-term shift in the U.S. population as southern states which were previously considered to be too hot to live in now become attractive residential areas.
