What Thermostat Temperature is Best for the Winter?

December 10, 2019

Staying warm during winter can be a challenge—and expensive! At 4 Seasons Heating & Air in Alpharetta, we have more than 40 years of experience helping homeowners remain warm and save money in the process. Read on to consider the concept of optimal temperature and what it may mean for you.

Energy Savings vs. Comfort

Optimal temperature is a matter of perspective. You may consider it from the perspective of minimizing heating costs as much as possible. On the other hand, you may value comfort above all else, but perhaps you are willing to add a layer or two in order to turn the thermostat down.

The DOE Recommendation

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends 68 degrees Fahrenheit as the ideal “at-home” temperature if you want to limit costs. Surveys suggest that the average person thinks 71 degrees is more practical.

Lower Temperatures While You Are Away

The good news is that the DOE also suggests that the average homeowner can save 10 percent or more by lowering temperatures by seven degrees or more for at least eight hours a day. Most people are out of the home for at least that long, which is a great opportunity to drop it to 60 or even lower.

Lower Temperatures at Night

You can also save while you are sleeping. Some experts recommend as low as 62 at night. If that is too low for you, you can certainly set it five degrees or so lower than while you are awake.

Taking a Smart Approach

Having three or more temperatures throughout a day may seem like a hassle, but this is where smart thermostats come in. Your thermostat can lower the temperature after you leave for work and get the house nice and toasty before you step back inside your home.
